Tree guy, brewer, Mr. Versatility, likes red meat
Athlete, hill climber, juggernaut, adores Canada
Anna and Bruce met while mountain biking in Circumburke. A grueling 26 mile MTBike race around Burke Mountain in the NEK of VT. Bruce struck up a conversation with a rather determined Anna somewhere in the back country of Victory and became instant friends. About a year later they met again, not in a race but on a date with friends to ride around Kingdom Trails and get to know each other on 2 wheels. They immediately fell in love and began a long distance relationship. A few months later on March 13th, 2020, the world changed as we know it due to the pandemic and they found each other with the time to become closer, quarantine together and ride a shit tun of bikes. Life discussion led to life style changes which led to ideas of “what do you want to do in this life?” conversations. A brief drive by of the East Haven Chapel by Bruce a year earlier led to an idea about exciting spots for a business. Within moments, Anna constructed a plan to rehabilitate the chapel, preserve the property, build a cabin/taproom and call it Dirt Church. Immediately plans began, trips were made and further random exploration of East Haven Vermont and the East Haven Chapel began! The dream was beginning and ideas were flowing like a mtbike ride in September on single track. Anna and Bruce began the hard work of cleaning, painting, digging in and starting Dirt Church Brewery for the community.
On September 4th, 2020 Bruce and Anna closed on the (2) properties. The former East Haven Chapel and a very tired former Grange Hall👇🏼
This photo (shot in 1944) shows the Grange Hall during East Haven Field Day, an annual event for the community to celebrate the town’s history and people at the town center. Look carefully for the church in the background.
The grange hall was sold several times, modified and became a derelict 2 family with a questionable foundation and safety concerns. We considered rehab and remodeling but it was too far gone. So with a couple trusted local contractors and 5 dumpsters, we did the next best thing….
November 19th, 2020 our post and beam cabin arrived from Country Carpenters and construction began for the taproom through winter.
With a handful of able bodied contractors, we fought off cold and snow to get the place dry, heated and pseudo livable, while we added interior details.
After a long winter and many nails driven, we persevered and successfully built a bar, draught system, added seating and hung a shingle in East Haven!
Our state of the art 7bbl Brewhouse was built & birthed shortly after in spring 2021. We opened our doors on August 14th, 2021 with “Holy Hops IPA”
